Millions of participants for the 3rd American Week of Sport
The American Week of Sport (AWoS), promoted by ACES in the American continent, celebrated its third edition with unprecedented success in both organization and participation. The spectacular opening in Zapopan, Mexico, crowned the most attended AWoS in history.
Under the inspiring slogan #ActivateAmerica, the initiative reminded citizens of the importance of staying active through any form of physical or sporting activity. The 2025 edition mobilized an entire continent: more than 8 million people in 14 countries, from the United States to Chile, took part in the various events.
Held simultaneously with the European Week of Sport, from 23 to 30 September, the third AWoS achieved impressive growth: 133% more events (4,546 in total) compared to 2024, 49% more participating cities (91 overall), and a remarkable increase in engagement among athletes, professionals, and citizens alike.
The initiative also stood out for its strong commitment to inclusion, involving children, seniors, people with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged groups in shared outdoor activities guided by qualified instructors from local administrations.
Among the many participating cities were Buenos Aires (World Capital of Sport 2027), Chihuahua (American Capital of Sport 2025), Guayaquil (next American Capital of Sport 2026), and major metropolises like Mexico City, Cali, Montevideo, and Santiago de Chile. For the first time, a city from the Dominican Republic also joined the initiative.
A major innovation this year was the AWOS Activa ACES App, a technological tool that allowed cities and citizens to access information, data, and continuous incentives for physical activity, creating a digital bridge across the continent.
The success of AWoS 2025 was made possible thanks to the collaboration of ACES partners such as the Organization of American States (OAS), UNESCO, CADE, and the Ibero-American Sports Council (CID), along with several national federations and the D+D Network of Latin American Cities for Sport and Development.
Special recognition goes to Valle del Cauca and Cali, Colombia, for organizing a record number of events, and to Zapopan, Mexico, for hosting the official Opening Ceremony on September 20, which included the 1st International Forum on Physical Activity and Health by ACES.
The #ActivateAmerica concept and the AWoS are becoming part of the social fabric of the Americas, promoting healthy lifestyles and the importance of continuous physical activity.
