Baku receives the plaque as World Capital of Sport 2026
Baku has officially received the commemorative plaque designating the city as World Capital of Sport 2026, in a solemn and symbolic ceremony held at the City Hall of Baku. The plaque was presented by Gian Francesco Lupattelli, President of ACES, as a testament passed on from Monaco, World Capital of Sport 2025, marking the continuity of this prestigious international designation.
The ceremony took place in the ceremonial hall of the City Hall and gathered a distinguished representation of institutional and sporting authorities. Among those present were the Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan, the Mayor of the City of Baku, representatives of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee, and numerous high-level officials, filling the hall and underlining the importance of this milestone for the city and the country.
During the event, President Lupattelli highlighted Baku as a global benchmark for the organization of major international sporting events, as well as for its long-term commitment to sport for all policies, urban development through sport, and the promotion of healthy and active lifestyles among its citizens.
