Malaga, the European Capital of Sport ready to start a year full of sports

A sports celebration took place in the Cervantes theatre of Malaga on December 3, during the gala organized by the European Capital of Sport 2020.

With the presence of the President of ACES Europe Gian Francesco Lupattelli, the Mayor of Malaga Francisco De la Torre presented the city’s project titled: “Commitment and Challenge”, as well as he introduced the city’s sports programme for 2020.

“I love Malaga and Andalucia and I think it will be a great sport capital, following the example of Prague, Marseille, Sofia and Turin”, said G.F. Lupattelli, expressing his hopes that Spain would host the 2032 Olympic Games, including Malaga’s sporting venues.

“I met Mr. Lupattelli and when I learned that there was an association (ACES Europe) that evaluated cities for their sporting activity, I knew I wanted that for my city,” recalled Minister of Education and Sports of the Junta de Andalucía, Javier Imbroda, committing to provide support of the region.

The event was enlivened by several rhythmic gymnastics choreographies by the Málaga and Miralmar Rhythmic clubs, as well as the actor Salva Reina, who gave an acting performance.

The Sports Council of the municipality has made an ambitious plan for 2020, aiming at increasing the number of active people in the city which is currently 50%. More concretely, the city will emphasize at the participation of schools in sport activities, notably the Copa del Rey basketball (February 13 to 16), the Spanish Cup of Futsal (from March 5 to 8) or the Spanish Master Athletics Championship.
